OAPT AAPT Winter Meeting 2006 AAPT

Board Planning Retreat

AAPT Board Planning Retreat
June 22-25,2006
Belmont Conference Center
Elkridge, Maryland

Introduction

The AAPT Executive Board, along with a small number of member participants, will convene a retreat to discuss and develop action plans to improve the AAPT's response to its mission:

"To enhance the understanding and appreciation of physics through teaching. "

The retreat work will be guided by one question:
How can the OAPT strengthen its role as a recognized leader in physics education?

Approach and Outcomes

The activities will focus on general features of decision making that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  1. Prioritizing and sequencing actions that will respond to trends in association membership and member services and in the broader physics teaching community;
  2. Developing synergy between national AAPT and AAPT Sections;
  3. improving AAPT's visibility, viability, and influence in the physics and science communities;
  4. building partnerships with other professional associations and government agencies (local and national) in ways that enhance AAPT's stature in the professional community.

Post-Retreat Activities

The Executive Board will issue a report to the membership after the retreat. It is anticipated that the EB will encourage members to participate actively in specific efforts that enrich the membership at large and transition AAPT to a thriving organization in the 21st century.

Retreat Planning

AAPT members from targeted groups are invited to provide input on emerging issues in AAPT prior to the retreat. These pre-retreat discussions will be led by our retreat facilitator, Karen L. Johnston. Please contact her with your ideas at kjohnston@mindspring.com.
