Dave Doucette - Lead physics teacher and head of science
at Dr. G. W. Williams S.S. in Aurora. Dave taught for ten
years in Scarborough (Agincourt CI and Cedarbrae CI) before
heading 'north'. Dave is a cognitive psychologist who became
a 'born-again physicist' with a keen interest in Physics
Education Research and Bridging Research into Classroom
Practice.
Dave Lanziner - Lead chemistry teacher at Dr. G. W. Williams
SS in Aurora.
Dave was a former science head in Toronto (York Mills CI)
before moving to York
Region. When not busy delivering Chemistry courses, Dave
is pressed into service to help with the growing number
of physics courses at Williams. Dave is happy to add his
spontaneity and engineering background to help students
'get the HOTS for physics.'
HOTS - Higher Order thinking Skills
This interactive session will engage participants
in 'hands-on, minds-on' learning activities intended to stimulate
higher-order- thinking-skills [HOTS] in students. By utilizing
a mix of construction-oriented activities [including culminating],
whiteboarding,
conceptual modelling, science pHiction, role playing and novel
uses of common equipment, students are challenged to apply
physics concepts in a variety of learning modes. In addition
to enhancing 'construct development' students view physics
as relevant and fun. Handouts will be provided, including
assessment and evaluation practices to support learning.
