Donald Schmitt 
is a principal in the Toronto firm of Diamond and Schmitt Architects Incorporated. 
He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Schools and the Faculty of Architecture, 
University of Toronto where he was awarded the Royal Architectural Institute of 
Canada Medal for design in the thesis year.   He was adjunct professor at 
the Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto from 1986 to 1993 and at the 
School of Architecture, Dalhousie University. He also taught at the University 
of Texas, University of Pennsylvania, University of Waterloo and University of 
British Columbia.   His notable projects include the Metro Central YMCA, 
Toronto and the Earth Sciences Centre, University of Toronto, both recipients 
of the Governor General's Medal, Symphony Hall, Detroit and the Bahen Centre for 
Information Technology, University of Toronto.   Donald Schmitt is currently 
involved in the design of academic buildings for 16 colleges and universities 
across North America. He is principal in charge of the campus and building design 
of the new University of Ontario Institute of Technology.   He and his firm 
have won over 90 design awards including five Governor General¹s Awards. 
He is the founding Chair of the Public Art Commission, City of Toronto where he 
served for 7 years. He is currently a member of the Advisory Committee on Planning 
Design and Real Estate of the National Capital Commission, Ottawa. He is a fellow 
of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and Board Member of the Canadian
