Hunt is a Professor Emeritus in the Department
of Physics at the University of Guelph. He was awarded the University Medal of Merit in 1999 Hunting the Sector-A Mathematical Detective Story While translating a 17th century French work on geometrical optics and perspective, I have been using the geometry to aid in the translation of the 17th century vocabulary. In one sequence of theorems the proofs became more and more obscure. The reason for this led to an almost forgotten mathematical instrument and some historical information on analogue computation. The story comes down to the present day with the identification of a useless remnant in the teaching of elementary mathematics. |
