General
Relativity | |||
Students
love the bizarre ideas of General Relativity: curved space, black holes, wormholes
etc. Even though General Relativity is not explicitly part of the curriculum,
it can form a one-class enrichment when you are covering Special Relativity, Frames
of Reference, Universal Gravitation, Euclidean Geometry or even grade-9 Astronomy.
General Relativity is famous for being very difficult but in this workshop you will see how an introduction to the subject can be very student-centered and non-threatening. This will be an active, hands-on workshop in which you will be exploring General Relativity using balloons, plastic bottles and other pieces of high-tech equipment. Teachers who already teach some General Relativity are especially welcome to share their ideas and resources. Let me know if you want to contribute to this session. | |||
Biography | |||
Roberta Tevlin has been a physics
teacher at Danforth C. T. I. in Toronto for 11 years. She attended an Einstein+
Workshop at the Perimeter Institute a few years back and since then has been working
on ways to make modern physics more accessible to high school students. (She also
plays trombone in a band every Saturday afternoon in a bar not too far from this
year's conference.) |
