The Physics Challenge - Cooperative Group Problem Solving

Problem solving is something we all wish our students did better. However, there are many necessary skills that are simply not taught or that are assumed students will naturally “pick-up on” when taught using traditional methods. In this session, Chris Meyer will present the comprehensive Cooperative Group Problem Solving (CGPS) process developed at the University of Minnesota. Participants will be presented with a forty minute “Physics Challenge”, Chris’s own version of the CGPS process with an empirical twist!

Group Problem Solving - presentation

Chris Meyer completed a Specialist Degree in Physics at the University of Toronto, but didn’t really get this physics stuff until he began teaching. From his experiences passing on physics knowledge at A. Y. Jackson (North York), the Ontario Science Centre, Rosedale Heights (Toronto) and now York Mills C. I. (North York) he came to realize that the teaching techniques he was raised with were not adequate. After attending a lecture by Edward Redish at the University of Toronto, and becoming acquainted for the first time with Physics Education Research, things began to change.
