Large Hadron Collider & Particle Physics

The Large Hadron Collider is the largest, most complex scientific experiment in history. Currently being completed at CERN, it represents the culmination of two decades of effort by thousands of physicists. This presentation will explore the physics related to the LHC. This includes: how the LHC uses magnetic fields to guide protons around the experiment, momentum and energy in collisions between subatomic particles, and the standard model of particle physics.

Damian Pope, PhD is the Senior Manager of Scientific Outreach at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of Queensland, Australia in the area of quantum physics. He also has extensive experience as a science communicator explaining the wonders of the universe to people of all ages and from all walks of life. Most notably, he has led the creation of Perimeter Institute’s series of educational videos. To date, these videos have been watched by over 150,000 students.
