We are pleased to announce the 2nd annual Symposium on Education & Cognition to be held at McMaster University August 13-15, 2014. Cognitive scientists have been systemically studying processes such as attention, memory and learning for more than 150 years. This rich resource of knowledge has been only recently applied to developing evidence-based interventions in education. The speakers in this Symposium will explore how cognitive principles can inform instructional design and critical issues in education to bridge the gap between the lab and classroom.
The symposium will launch Wednesday night with a public address from Pippa Lock, who is a recent 3M award winner from McMaster. Her address about active methods for teaching the physical sciences will be followed by a panel discussion of other 3M award winners.
Thursday will have two main sessions: (1) Promising principles from the Lab and (2) Classroom based studies. We have a great list of invited speakers: Katherine Rawson, Steve Joordens, Karl Szpunar, Melody Wiseheart, and Dan Schacter.
On Friday, we will have two workshops (limited to 50 seats) on Presentation by Design and Multiple Choice Question Writing.
This year we are also inviting attendees to submit abstracts for a poster session to be held Thursday morning. Abstracts are due by June 30th.
Registration is now open. Cost will be $30 for the symposium and $30 for the workshops.
