A Rainy Morning

I took both these pictures after I woke up one morning and observed that it was raining. The physics involved it quite simple, however it has a tremendous effect on the outcome of the pictures. The focal length is the distance between the optical center of the lens and the region where the image is focused inside the camera. Since I used a digital camera, it is difficult to determine the focal length. Instead, I measured the approximate distance from the lens to the focused object and compared the two distances. In the first image, the focus was about 10 centimetres. I focussed on the raindrops which were on the window. As a result, the image of the raindrops appeared sharp and clear, and the background of the tree appeared blurry and unclear. In the second image, the focus was approximately 5 metres. This time, I focussed on the tree in the background. Consequently, the image of tree and its surroundings appeared clear, while the raindrops in the foreground appeared blurry and almost invisible.
